RGB Pixel Strings from Ray Wu's Online Store - Great Prices

I have been able source RGB pixel strings (similar to MPH pixel strings) from Ray Wu. He had been kind enough to now post these new product on his web store. The price of these is nearly 1/4 the price of the MPH pixels so makes it very affordable to a lot more enthusiasts

RGB Pixel strings using the 6083 chip is a 4 wire 5vdc RGB string that can have each light individually controlled through DMX to give some awesome effects.

Now to run these lights you will need a 6803 DMX decoder which can also now be obtained from Rays store at http://www.aliexpress.com/fm-store/701799/209915969-314083682/LT-6803-DMX-Decoder-DC5-24V-input-LPD6803-specific-protocol-output-signal-Max256-steps-.html

You will also need a dmx dongle to connect the controllers to the computer, these can be obtained for approx US$60 from different places in the DIY community. try looking at these places

And finally you will need good RGB sequencing software and that is Lightshow Pro 1.7 which you can download a 30 day demo before deciding to purchase (demo is limited to 16 output channels only)

I think, i will try....

One question for my knowledge:
How each pixel address was managed to be sure to send the right order to right pixel?
Does the controller effects individual address regarding the order he find each pixel IC on the line?

Means, for example i we have 3 RGB pixel Led : 1st one will have channel 1/2/3, second one 4/5/6 etc...?

You set the controller DMX starting address, so for example we set the controller to DMX channel 1, the first pixel in the string will be RGB channel 1 (1,2,3) and then each other pixel behind that will just cascade up until there are either no pixels left in the string or you have used up all the channels. If one pixel fails you can just cut it out a put another pixel in its place and it will still work, this is the same chip that appears to be used in the CCR and that doesn't matter which order the pixels go in as they just use a cascading addressing protocol.

I've played with these pixels and they do appear to be pretty much close to the ones MPH has sourced from ledwalker. I'd really like to see someone purchase the controller and prove that this all works as expected.

I see that the DMX Controller has a single output supporting 360 DMX channels which would mean a total string length of RGB 120 nodes, is this a supported configuration when connecting the pixels into a string. I think this will require at least 7.2 Amps to drive it, so a 10 amp psu is going to be required.

I am also going to look at getting artnet/dmx converters as I will want to be creating larger displays and that will require more dmx controllers and USB ports. I understand that LSP will be supporting ARTNET in the future.

This new project is getting exciting and is certaintly pushing the envelope.

The intention is not to run the strings power supply through the controller power supply, but instead use an external power supply for the string or strip supply power and only use the two communication wires from the controller, this way you should be able to use the one controller to be able to control both the 5VDC strings and the 12VDC strips so allowing you to maximise your channel use to the fullest. As long as the data comms with the strips/strings are all connected in series then i believe this should work. It will be nice to actually prove it.

Ok, ordered 100 rgb pixel nodes and controller to play with.

things I have been thinking about (and may be answered when I receive them)

the last node of the string, will it have a connector or pigtails to extend the string out past the 50/100 nodes on the string.

The controller is supporting 360 DMX channels that gives capacity of 120 RGB pixel or other types of RGB strips and all nodes need to cascade from the previous node, so if you want to link strips, pixel strings to the full capacity of the controller then they have to be extended from the last node.

Not sure that the only possibility is to cascade each string...

We need to have feedback from the first ones who will made tests...

I take for example the other strings based on HL1606, you can cascade them (up to 3 strings 150 RGB LED), then you can have the rainbow effect from LED1 to LED 450.
But if you cut the strings and connect them in parallel, trough a distributor (5 outputs) or directly on the controller (2 outputs), then the effects start in parallel on all strings, and all led 1 will be light at same time and so on..

I don't know if it will be the same with these ones...

Another remark, it's more cheap to buy 5x1 meter strings, than directly one unit 5 meters. This is what i saw
on the site.

Henri,

Make sure you don't confuse the names, you are referring to the 8606 pixel strips and not the 8606 pixel strings.
I deliberately put the link to the pixel strip being sold by the metre instead of the 5 metre roll as I also saw that it was cheaper.
