The matrix details:

The matrix is 1220mm x 1800mm (47 x 71 inches) this is the size of the corex sheet that the CCRs are siliconed to, the strips are spaced approx 110 mm apart and the orientation of the strip to the corex is very important for correct light diffusion. The corex should have the internal ribs running long ways (across the sheet) so the strip is set up so it starts at the top and goes down 12 pixels (1200mm) then joined and spaced 110mm apart secured with silicon to the corex. The second CCR section then runs upwards and so on in a zig zag fashion until you have as many columns as required for me it was 16 columns which makes 4 CCRs at 12 pixels per column for a total of 192 usable pixels with 8 pixels that can be kept a spares. (the CCR pixels are not addressed and can be used in any order)

Each pixel of the CCR is 100mm long so i made the matrix with approx 110mm gap between each CCR section (you can make this 100mm if you wish) this allows a matrix pixel to be created that is approx 100mm by 110mm when the second sheet of corex is put on top of the CCRs. This then allows the light to diffuse into a matrix due to the 120 degree light angle but stops it diffusing into the next pixel due to the rib orientation.

I havent completed this yet as I need to build a supporting frame, I intend to use some electrical conduit or PVC pipe to construct a supporting frame. I will add this to this post when this is done.

The beauty about this matrix is that you can easily build it in a night, its light weight, strong, weather resistant, bright and has many pixels. You can do scrolling text, animations and great transitional effects

What you need:
1: 4 x CCRs or equivalent pixel strip and controller
2: 1220 x 2440 MM sheet of corex 5mm thick
3: 1 x tube of Non corrosive curing clear silicone
4: Solder and soldering iron
5: 4 x 500mm lengths of coloured wire
6: A sharp knife for cutting corex
7: Pair of scissors
8: 1 tape measure/ruler
9: 1 soft pencil
10: Wire cutters

So you say you cant afford 4 CCRs (US$250.00ea) to create a matrix or you just want DMX control only. Well then you can take the other approach and use Ray Wu who has the pixel strips that can do a similar job to the CCR (CCR can produce more colours), he also has the DMX controllers that you will need and the power supply to power it all up. This will save you a lot of money but then you dont get the LOR support and great warranty. This way will also take 2 DMX universes compared to 1 LOR universe.

I haven't used these strips as of yet but do intend to get a sample (eventually) to test, The controller used is the same controller that is used with the 6803 Pixel strings and you can see a demo of how they work when controlling the pixel strings here

What you will need

20 metres (4 x 5 metre lengths) 6803 Pixel Strips

1 x J1sys Pixad8 pixel controller

can anyone confirm the led lights on the "LED Digital strip, with 6803 IC, 30pcs 5050 SMD per meter:DC12V input;with silicon tubing;" strips can be controlled individually? as i have seen a lot that you can control in groups of 2 or 3 but i am looking for strips that you can control each one by it's self
Thanks

The only strip that i have seen is either in 3 x 5050 RGB LEDs per pixel which is 12vdc rated or 2 x 5050 RGB LEDs which are 5vdc rated. The 6803 i have only seen in 3 x 5050 RGB LEDs per pixel configuration. I have never seen strip with single 5050 RGB LEDs per pixel, if you come across it please put up a post.

Ray has a led tube with individual led control. I'm not certain they're 5050's. But they are dmx, and 16 segments per meter.

I'm not sure he's got them on his site yet...but they're cost competitive with the strips.

I'm thinking about creating a 16 x16 array with them 1m x 1.5m.

has anyone tryed the 8806ic ribbon from Ray Wu? Im thinking about making a ccr matrix but just have one question the 6803 controller will run 360 channels, can i limit its output to 256 channles (or less) and run 2 per universe.

I havent tried them and don t know of anyone who has. As far as running the controller you should be able to do that i would believe.

But if this is planning for next years display then you may be better waiting until the new year when there should be the TP3244 available which most of us are using with either 2801 or 6803 IC driven pixels. This will give you many more options than the 6803 controller and coupled the with the ECG DR-4 DMX dongle you can get upto a total of 16 universes and the TP3244 can drive upto 4 dmx universes all for under $200

When you say "8806ic" I didn't find anything on Ray's site, so I'm guessing you would be refering to 6803?

According to my talk with David (of LSP), he is using the l-tech 6803 drivers in his display (http://www.aliexpress.com/fm-store/701799/209915969-314083682/LT-6803-DMX-Decoder-DC5-24V-input-LPD6803-specific-protocol-output-signal-Max256-steps-.html), though I don't know how it turned out for him.

there is no way to limit the channels but you can set the starting address on the 6803 and you don't have to have all the channels used you can just connect as many lights as you need on each device so you could set 1 to channel 1 and the other to channel 256

There are some more details on it here
http://www.usledsupply.com/shop/rgb-dmx-lpd6803-decoder.html

i have used it with 3 reels of the RGB 6803 Digital Strip with the silicone coating and it worked quite well:)
tho i don't think i would use it for video as you may be able to see the fading steps and with the 12v strip every 3 LED lights change together but it is great for general effect lighting there are 120 LED lights per reel and it uses 120 DMX channels per reel not bad for $160

Gday Eddy and others,

Very keen to build a matrix for the 2012 show, is the CCR or the Ray's strips still the best products out there for this? as i release this guide is over a year old.

A PIXAD8 or P12R (from J1SYS) with generic 6803 strips (from China) would be the cheapest way.

If you need to use with LOR software, then you'd have to stick with CCRs I guess until LOR introduces E1.31 output (to talk to the PIXAD8 or P12R).
