Actually to the point of playing with the two I bought and want to update the firmware.

What PIC family do I set it for? Does it need power applied? (which may be why it doesn't auto detect?)

I'm not a very experienced PICkit user (yet).

Hello Jon

It uses a PIC32MX340F128H.

The board should be powered from an external source and make sure the pic is not supplying power to the board.

Here is a video that shows the process for flashing the firmware.  This video is for the ECG8 but if you replace the chip type and firmware file you should be fine.
