That is fantastic! A real show stopper. Going to have to keep the kids away from it or it will be destroyed. I would love to see photos of how it works. Thanks Stephen.

made some of these a few years ago and still use them. Here is a link for some pics. VERY cheap to make and hold up VERY well.
Here is a video in action

Thanks for the nice comments boy’s.

Construction was a bit of trial and error, so I will have to reverse engineer before I do a construction drawing.

The box is basically a 300mm cube constructed from coreflute sheet, I bought a 1200 x 600mm sheet from Bunnings. Three corners are folded and glued and the fourth is just glued together. I used Sika polyurethane adhesive and only glued one corner at a time, to make sure it dried square, I had a short piece of ally angle that I clamped on the outside.

If you don’t know how to fold coro, here’s a YouTube video that shows you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfWSMCNGn8o I haven’t got one of those cutter gizmo’s I just used a box cutter knife.

The bottom and rib that hold’s the motor I cut from some 10mm thick foam PVC sheet that was an off cut from another project.
The product I’ve got is called Foamex its available from plastic’s suppliers,
its great stuff for making cut-outs etc. its rigid, easily cut with hand tools and you can paint it. Comes in thicknesses from 3 - 25mm

I guess an alternative might be to maybe laminate two core’s together with some glue, cross the flutes at 90 degrees for extra strength.

Folding the lid across the flutes was the hardest part, again i attacked it with a knife and straight edge cutting a ‘V’ shape to allow it to fold. I only tried to complete one finished fold at a time and allowed each one to dry overnight before going to the next one, this takes longer but I achieved square corners which made the lid fit better.

I bought the geared motor off of eBay, its 12V DC 5 RPM, I wouldn’t go any quicker that that, 4 RPM would probably be even better.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/STOCK-SMALL-GEARED-MOTOR-DC12V-5RPM-STOCK-for-School-Project-Model-Jf6f-/121591030625?hash=item1c4f63e361&_uhb=1

The crank is a bit off 6mm thick ally, you can see from the pic that initially it was too long and I had to shorten the stroke. The lid is connected to the crank with another piece of PVC foam although this could be another material.
You can also see in the picture that I wasn’t sure where I was going to attach the connecting rod so I drilled a lot of holes for a bit of trial and error.
I will note the dimensions that worked on a drawing when I get around to doing it.

The box is covered with some red vinyl film and finished with organza ribbon which I glued on (same glue)

The LEDs were salvaged from a service station canopy (I’m a scavenger)
red ones on the base and two white ones on the swinging santa panel. I found the santa image on a stock photo site.

I follow up with a drawing later, but in the meantime if anyone has queries?

cheers,

Steve
