    Smaller RGB Smart pixels/nodes/bullets

Hi All. In addition to my outdoor setup, I've wanted to put some addressable nodes on my Christmas Tree but the common bullet nodes feel way too big for me to run them through out the tree. I know some folks disagree, and that's fine - it's just a personal preference. Anyway, I'm wondering if...

2023 is done, starting to plan for 2024: what will you keep, what will you change?

My wife suggested this year that we put the light display behind the house - which is against a road, whereas the front of the house is in a cul-de-sac that people can't drive past. I didn't do it, but I think next year might be the year to do that. The trouble is we only have one circuit that's...

Running xLights Sequence on Raspberry Pi (And maybe an ESP device?)

I don't think my RasPi consumes that much power. I don't have a ammeter hooked up, so I couldn't tell you for sure, but I feel confident that running Wifi it's no more that 1.5A - at least how I'm using it. (I suspect if you were driving an HDMI display off it it'd be pulling more.) I think...

Running xLights Sequence on Raspberry Pi (And maybe an ESP device?)

That's what I use to step down the voltage - I don't need the 3A provided by it, but it was a cheap and easy solution. If you wanted to consolidate things, you could run your Raspberry Pi and WT32 off of that converter. My Raspi lives in a different box anyway.

Running xLights Sequence on Raspberry Pi (And maybe an ESP device?)

That's correct - when everything is operating properly*, devices draw only the amount of current they need. For my 5V switch, I got a 5.5x2.1mm barrel connector and crimped some terminal forks on it. So it gets 5V from the same PSU as my Raspberry Pi. That was convenience for my sake though. I...

Running xLights Sequence on Raspberry Pi (And maybe an ESP device?)

Correct, my Raspberry Pi is connected to my regular home network via Wifi. In the control box with my Pi is an ethernet Switch (a Netgear Unmanaged switch: GS305) and the switch's cables go out to Modules (Teensys in my case).I think the device you linked to is literally just a splitter (breaks...

Running xLights Sequence on Raspberry Pi (And maybe an ESP device?)

I have not encountered any lag issues with Wifi, but I'd read about them, and didn't really want to spend the money to test it. It was easier to go with copper than worry about radio signal issues. (As an aside, I once developed a project that used IR all in doors, and discovered that it didn't...

Running xLights Sequence on Raspberry Pi (And maybe an ESP device?)

A little late to the party, but my setup follows your essential premise: A Raspberry Pi and some off-the-shelf Microcontrollers to drive lights. Here's a thrown-together Diagram: I've got my control box, which contains: Raspberry Pi 3 running FPP. A 5V PSU (For the Pi, and to drive 5V...

    A Well organized dry box...

I just wanted to share my most recent accomplishment, which is something that passers-by will never see: How much cleaner and better organized my electronics box is this year. This was my Christmas display setup from last year. As you can see it is an irresponsibly taped down PSU, Raspberry Pi...

    Strings with Pigtails, or DIY?

Hi all, I'm on the verge of placing an order to get strings for my display this year. Last year I had a pretty simple setup, so this year is a step up. Looking at options though, I'm confronted with a choice ("just one??" you say - I know) I can buy strings from Ray Wu or the like with...

    Controller for AC lights

Last year was my first year with a sequenced setup. I had a single string of pixels (connected in 5 Arches - around 300 individual pixels I think) and two AC strands wrapped around trees. I controlled everything from a Raspberry Pi. The AC strands were controlled through Solid State Relays. I...

    Weatherproof enclosures?

Like @Mark_M, I use a DRiBOX - which is very nice, though it may not work for larger setups. My janky setup fit in okay: It was really fast and reckless. That said, It kept everything nice and dry throughout the few weeks I had it setup. I was a little worried about airflow but it didn't seem...

    Hello from Oregon, USA

Hi There! I just signed up. This is my first year trying to put together a light display, though I have lots of experience with Electronics and addressable LEDs. Trying to keep it from consuming too much time and within a reasonable budget this year, I'm making a series of small arches, and a...
