As a follow up, now have a basic system running. Built my own controller based on a design by scott nation that uses DPI mode, got and installed a license from Falcon, learnt some xlights basics and have a song flashing 2 strings of ws2811 leds each with 10 leds in them. Now the real work starts
After looking at some cro traces, it seems the tester is putting a 10uS pause between sets of 24bits, and some pixels in the strip are seeing this as a reset. Cro channel 1 shows tester output, input to pixel 1. Channel 2 shows output pixel 1. Tester is putting a 10uS pause after every 48bits.

Hi, I have strung 1mm stainless cable from the eaves to the ground in a fan pattern, and am wanting to hang lights from the wire, and am looking for a recommendation. They don't have to be smart pixels. Am considering rope light, or plastic coated leds on flexible PCB. Any comments welcome
I have 2 strings of WS2812B LEDs purchased some time ago. I am using a 2811 pixel tester (it is marked with SP002E). One strip works fine, the other randomly flickers.
When I look at the Data stream on a CRO, the tester '0' timing (T0H, T0L) is OK, but the '1' timing is wrong (T1L is 1.1uS...
I am an electronics engineer, and having a cape that suits my system is a bit of a challenge, so if I can I want to make my own. Most of the ones for purchase (except from Smartalec, and some of the Hanson stuff) seem overkill to drive a bunch of WS281x LEDs. Also, there doesn't seem to be much...
I have applied to join falcon christmas, but it hasn't been approved yet. In the meantime, I am trying to understand the details of designing my own cape.
With FPP V7 (or 6) on the pi in DPipixel mode, it seems there can be up to 24 outputs. Is it stated somewhere if there is any preference for...
Hi,
I would like to make my own controller hat for a pi. It seems with the new FPP V7 in DPi mode, i only need level converters on the gpio pins. Is this right? I seem to understand you need some sort of 'license' or 'eeprom' from falcon for it to work in FPP?
I like the idea of a status LED. The strip I ordered is non IP, and can be cut at each pixel, so easy access for the data line and power. I just unsolder one of the LEDs and tap in to RGB
Hi thewanderingpine. Yes, that would work, but I could also use a WS2811 chip to do the decoding (https://www.adafruit.com/product/1378) and just get it to take place of one WS2812B pixel in a channel. This will probably work better regarding timing with other WS2812 leds in a string.
I was...
