Hi Guys,

I am planning on making a pixel matrix to go on my house which will be 1400mm wide x 1500mm high. It will be around 9-10 metres from the road. I was thinking of spacing the pixels at 50mm apart. Is this normal practise or can you share what you have done on various other displays??

All my pixels are 50mm spacing but my viewing distance is 25 meters. I find that the 50mm works well for me and I would not use any larger spacing on my display but eventually I may change to 25mm. (although that would be a crap load of lights)
It would depend on what you are expecting to produce on the matrix, whether it be moving animations or just part of the display. Moving animations on my matrix does not work too well but I think the spacing is fine for effects / Text etc.

Yes that was my concern. Closer than 50mm spacing means a crap load of pixels but would give better results. I would like to have moving images across it. I have seen this done on most peoples mega trees (singing faces etc) and I could only assume that their spacing is not less than 50mm. I live a standard street frontage.

My first Matrix was 8 rows of 50 at 50mm spacing. It was ok

The next year I increased it to 12 rows 0f 50 at 25mm spacing. so much better.

Everything else is around 50mm spacing

It was my first year at this and built a matrix panel with bullet pixels, 64 x 25 at 30mm spacing. Viewing distance is about 10-15m, you can see it here:

Overall pretty happy with it, will likely make another the same this year with the two either side and a P10 in the middle.

I just got a quote from Ray - 32 x 1.5 metre soldered ends - 31 strings of 75 leds @ 5V and a spare one - gives me 50mm spacing between strings with 75 leds per string

Does anyone have recommendations on what is best to use for a DIY matrix? Boscoyo chromamesh is $50 but shipping is an extra $65 to Australia!!

would go a smaller matrix but higher resolution, at 9 meters it would be like looking at the tv screen from 2 feet. spotty and not great resolution.
my roof is INK 1003 pixels 12v. 25mm spacing, it was 20 string x 75 pix long x 32mm spacing between strings.I added more and went 32 x 75 this year but only 25mm spacing to increase resolution - much better, but also my viewers are from 15 m - 35m away, so it has improved for them.
I have a 4x3 P10 matrix under my verandah and people ask about the tv screen hanging down, but that would give great resolution, but waterproofing and cost for a matrix you're planning would be $$$$$. suggest the highest resolution as practicable if you're putting on video etc to sync with the sequence.

Ok. I double checked the measurement and my audience will be exactly 14 metres from matrix. So you think 50mm might be too far apart? It’s only money I guess. LOL!
