Hi I am wanting to run a projector on to my garage door as part of my display next season and wanted to know if a Pi with FPP can turn it on the projector and run a video/ loops of videos (Santa's workshop)

P.s it would be separate to my main show just wanted it to start and end when the main show starts.

In conjunction to @darylc 's message; if your projector doesn't have RS232 you could use an IR sender set the the 'on' command.

Any method you do I would strongly advise to have it also send an off command and then leave the projector in standby for a few minutes after use. Just to let the bulb be dimmed down and the cooling fans on for a while.

I know it is not what you are asking but if you wish to save some money you can just leave the projector on all the time. It can be a virtual matrix or used for triggered events with FPP.

This was done with $150 ebay specials. I did fall into the trap of very high ebay lumens though and as you can see the pumpkins stayed fairly bright due to being pretty reflective. I have since fixed that with tint film over the lens.

Time will tell with longevity of the projectors but they have been going good for 2 years and I even use one on the back patio for movies. If you go that way just make sure you read the actual specs on the resolution.

The poor contrast ratio of cheaper (or even brand name "data") projectors can be a real issue. There is way too much light output on black / dark scenes.

Very much so. I had that with an old one.

The newish ones are actually pretty good when there is a signal, just not when they where sitting there waiting.

Oh, the other thing I meant to add was always use the HDMI connection if possible instead of the VGA connection.

Starting with a digital signal will maximise your chances of a better contrast ratio and clearer image.

I absolutely use the ebay ones for other projects as well, They are much lighter and can be mounted anywhere
