Welcome to ACL. As Alan mentioned the ACL101 is a good place to begin. The ACL forums (and Media) are searchable and while rather opinionated, do have a good amount of useful information to help determine the hows and whys of (typically Christmas) lighting. The ACL Chat is also a good place to ask questions although it typically is fairly calm during the US daylight hours. Cheers.
