Derf, I would just like to say this is all your fault. Since you showed the lights at the Sydney mini, I have purchased the light you recommended and pulled out the waterproof covers i got a few years ago. Can't believe how much of a different dimension these will give with a Christmas light display. Thank you for taking the time to show us what you had found

Hey Mate,
Bought them a few years ago from a auction. Just had quite a few of them sitting at my work. Always wanted to buy the lights but they were so expensive until i saw the ones jack had at the syd mini and finally got one.

Quick question. I am about ready to make a purchase for a couple of moving heads. I've found a couple on Aliexpress that are 350Watt, and waterproof (IP65 rated). Then there are the 230W Sharpy units available on Amazon. My delima is that the price of 2 X waterproof units are more than the price of 4 X non-waterproof units. Time is running out, and I don't know how feasable a perspex "housing" for the non waterproof units are.

So the question is: Is it worth while to purchase the 2 X waterproof units, and they seem to be plug and play, or do I double it and get 4 X non waterproof units, and make a "waterproof" housing for them, knowing full well that heat is a huge issue with them? Would love to know what the community have to say about this.

Finally, I am in Brisbane, and the sun totally stuffs most things up during the month of December. Most of my pixels from last year lost the colour on the wires.

I ordered a 350w 'waterproof' one back in April, still waiting on it to show up, although did get notification it is now in Brisbane.

I've also got one of those 230w sharpy units via amazon, so like you I'm trying to work out what I need to do to make it more weather resistant.

Difficult to answer that question, but here's a few thing to consider:
the waterproof ones are also a lot brighter
yes you'll need some sort of cooling/venting for any enclosure you'd have to build, so factor in all the costs. If you buy ones like mccar posted above, unless you can buy them cheap at auction, they cost nearly as much as the 230W sharpy thus nearly doubling the price anyway.
4 lights will look better than 2 but that also means additional sequencing to make them look the best.

Ultimately you'll need to decide why you really want them, where they are going to go, is 2 or 4 lights better, can you build or buy waterproof enclosures cheaply enough if you go for the non-waterproof ones.
