sorry angus but you are wrong this is NOT user friendly, what is in the videos DOES NOT correspond to how the software works I tried to follow 1 tutorial word for word and get to the preview pane for a megatree and you can no longer just draw your rectangle on the image, very frustrating for a newbie I can tell you
it looks like it has great capabilities but the learning curve looks like it's too steep , I haven';t been able to turn a light on yet and have spent 8 hours fidlling and watching videos ( i don't see any lights turned on in any of the videos either)
I know the lights work as I have used David's E1.31 program to test and can turn them on and chase etc

First off I love the thought of all the functionality in HLS, but I'm struggling to get my head around the concepts used to tag/select items and move them.

Con: For instance, why do I need to select channels, then press a button to mark the channels as selected then select the function I want to use then select to paste to it. I found this to be so unintuitive that after several hours of watching videos that didn't sync up with what I was seeing (eventually figured out that channel output or whatever it is has been moved) I simply gave up.

Pro: Now if a couple of changes where made, to make it follow more windows/linux/OS conventions of how to select/copy/paste, I strongly believe no one would even need to buy LSP ever again, it could be that powerful.

Vixen 3 I was able to muddle my way through with no instruction video or PDF. In about 2hrs I had elements built and lights flashing, purely because everything I clicked/rightclicked worked exactly as I'd expect a windows program to behave. Unfortunately for Vixen is so limited in other areas atm it's still not viable for many people.

I guess my brain just doesn't think the same way as Joes, and thats a shame for me, because I can see how much power I could get from his amazingly well featured software.

I guess this is constructive critism,
Rowan

No worries, this new release of hls may seem complex , but it is actually very simplified compared to earlier releases .

I will have to create a new how to series of videos I guess .

Warning offtopic: Just fulfilling angus40's request.

Ok so here is a video of Vixen 3 running my star (half built).
https://vimeo.com/68020238

And heres my earlier video of the candy canes running off the same sequence.
https://vimeo.com/60481760

Will zip and post my vixen 3 folder from my documents soon and you can see if you can get it working. I have found that you will need to open the sequence in a basic editor and replace all instances of Rowan with your user name on your PC, otherwise it doesn't load the audio properly. May need to reselect preview background also (it's in preview image directory).
Make sure you rename your vixen 3 folder to something else before you add mine and swapping back should return you to normal. (No promises, somewhat untested)
Cheers,
Rowan

P..S. Now to wrestle with HLS again.

Thanks for the canes video , if that is indeed Vixen 3 . it is the first video showing actual lights and this is breakthrough news.
I hope to see fluid examples of Vixen 3 controlling lights before I take on the learning curve. :)
Hls is very polished now and it would be extremely hard to change to another sequencer ,

However that said it is good to not have tunnel vision also to keep effect options open and all sequencers being
able to cross platform.

I hope Vixen 3 developers consider having the ability to import .hls files .

this would give equal flexibility .

ATM, vixen 3 can only import (and convert 3 RGB channels to one pixel chanel) vixen 2 files. I imagine HLS would be able to output vixen 2, but that is doing it the long way for sure.

P.S. Video is loaded now.

Cheers,
Rowan

OK, OK ... I just re read my post from May. My how things change. I am now using only HLS. I have found it powerful and laid out a lot like LOR. In fact it is what LOR should have done this year. There are a few things different in that it doesn't have any beat, vu, or midi wizards, but it can import audacity mark up files which I find better anyway. The file sizes are huge and take a while to save once you have a good size sequence, but it is a very solid piece of software. Those things being said, there is so much more you can do with HLS that is just not possible in LOR and channel/universe setup/change is so much easier. Overall, so far I am a convert from LOR. Take some time to learn HLS and I'm sure you won't regret it.

I am new to sequencing as well and I picked HLS after trying to figure out what software to use for my over 10K pixels.
And I am glad I picked HLS!!!
I know it's not really intuitive and learning curve is a little steep, but Joe is working hard to make it more powerful and user friendly. Most of the issues and bugs what I found got fixed in matter of hours!
I can do some crazy effects and changes all over the place which would be a dream in other sequencers.
First I had set my mind on Light Show Pro but watching the tutorials it was very cumbersome to me. But true is that it's more intuitive.
To keep up video tutorials with the latest releases it's almost impossible for Joe since there is sometime a new version release 3 times a day!

angus40 The video link does not work anymore. Is it possible to reactivate it again? I was going to use some of your effect as inspiration for my display. The video it's gone! :-[
