12mm Pixel Megatree Mounting strips

Guys I am doing another Group Buy on our 12mm Pixel Megatree Mounting strips at DoItYourselfChristmas.com again. The good news is we now have them in both Black and White UV Stabilized HDPE. The bad news it still cost a small fortune for me to ship them to you. Typically around $80USD.


I shipped some to David (adski) last year and I will offer the same deal but cheaper if a couple of you guys want to get them. I will fill the Large Flat Rate box to either full or I hit the 20lb weight limit. This is 220-230 strips and ship them for a discounted price of $350. There will be a minimum of 220 strips in the box.

I'm interested in 150 strips in black. I live in the western suburbs of Sydney if anyone else wants to take the remainder of this order.

This has me thinking about the uses because effectively what is being made is strip which is already available, but just using the pixels instead and creating a lot of extra work

Sorry if I sound a bit negative but im trying to understand why someone would go through the expense and extra work to effectively do the same thing a strip is doing. Could it be the look is different to strips (i havent seen a comparison) or it is easier to service a dead pixel or its more durable than using strip or allows you to place a greater amount of tension to the string, but then pixels have a higher chance of failing with water ingress than strip

Also the strips need to be held somehow to stop them moving around in the wind if used as a tree and in the Australia summer the wind can be very strong with the southerlies so im wondering how that is effected.

I agree that strip is better quality but I think they are more suited for 2d trees. Mine is a 3d mega tree and I don't think you would get the same effect with strip as you do with individual nodes. From a distance my mega tree looks like a hologram in the front yard.

I want to update from last year from the eyelets and nylon strapping. I saw spring wood lights tree this year using this strip and I was impressed.

But this is the thing with a 3D tree you want to see the light from the back of the string as well and by adding this strip you then take away this effect and start to look more like strip

Also I know with a flat tree the strip is mounted to conduit to keep them pointing the same direction. Using conduit for a 360 tree to do the same thing doesn't really work that well so you have to rely on the actual tension and weight on the lights to keep it orientated the correct direction if you want your matrix to look neat. With this technique for mounting nodes the weight is in the rear of the strapping and it auto corrects the orientation so your light source is pointing out.

I don't actually want to see the light from the back, just the front.

I have seen other techniques where they use a basket weave strap horizontal in a few points on the tree to keep the lights facing out. I haven't tried this as my technique worked fine. The issue I had with the nylon strap is because the holes were cut by hand 1mm difference in spacing can add up to alot by the time you get to the end. That's why I'm changing to a machine cut version.

I have thought about changing it to triklits in the future but not just yet.

I made my own version of these for 2013, however they were more of a \_/ channel than a strip. (holes 8cm apart) The Mega tree was only 180 degrees. I turn the \_/ into _ (strips) for 2014 as it was to much of a sail and also down size into mini trees. With the 360 mini trees you could not see the lights behind, so they will only be 180 mini trees next year.

I have gone off the 360 trees, I feel it is hard to see the fact they are 360.

I think the choice is 180 degree high resolution (high string count) and 360 degree low resolution (low sting count, so you can see the ones behind)

The reason I made holders/strips was to ensure distance apart, and protect the wires from strain. Another reason can be that the lights are 10 cm apart * 50 = 5 meters this may be to long for some people, a strip allows it to be shorter.

I have come up with a new strip design for 2015 for a new mega tree. But its very time consuming. I hoping to make a template to do bulk whole drilling.

If you use these sort of strips they need extra holes to let the wind through.

For LED strips they need to be supported by something a lot stronger, and then again you would have an issue seeing the lights at the back of a 360 deg tree.

James70818 postage cost from the US to Australia makes them to expensive for me.

Thanks for the clarification as ive never used these and have mainly used strip in the past, I was trying to identify the advantages to see if the effort is worth while and that can only come from the guys that have used it or something similar.

Michael, I'll take the balance. Looking at doing my first 'Mega' Tree for 2015/16 so this will be a start.....

I ordered spares in case I wanted to make my tree taller, but if you like we can split the order straight in half if you like. Up to you.

hi James how many can you get in the 20 lbs weight limit please we will see if we can get some more orders
i would rather maximize the freight to reduce the shipping cost per piece and can we get a mixed order of black and white thanks

Michael I would say that I disagree about strip being only good for 2d trees. My tree is strip and its a 270 degree tree and you would be amazed at how good it looked. The vids and pics really don't do mine justice

I actually said more suited. It comes down to preference. I think anything that's straight and evenly spaced looks awesome. Hence why I want this strip.

i attend to agree with both sides and it is a personal preference i am going either 180 or 270 degree tree and i think the strips would work fine for my application but for 360 degree to get the full effect you need strings and wire so you can sell ALL of the strings
