Hello all,

I have been able to get hold of an 18RU 600mm Wide x 600mm Deep Server Rack.

Wondering if anyone has any thoughts on pros and cons.
One is to make sure everything is grounded properly (sparky mate to help there)

I am keen as it is on castors and I can manoeuvre around my garage....oh and lights will make it look cool.... :):):):)

I went all out with enclosures this year, upgrading from plastic storage containers .. biggest thing I found is I like a distributed setup, I find it easier to have power supply + controller as close as possible to the lights / props .. I'm not sure how these people with 8 power supplies setup in one box operate, but my setup needs a couple of power supplies on the roof and a few more in the front yard and yet another few front of house, so not sure if one big massive enclosure is going to be the go.

Hey mate,

My thoughts would be sure if you like it then go for it! My only concerns to a more open setup would be heat. It should look hella cool lit up!
Things to ponder.. How will you install the psu's? And controllers? How hard will it be to adjust / rewire as you go? How expensive are the shelves/racks/power rails/fans/etc that may be required to setup your blinky..

Cheers,
Nik

It has two 120mm fans in the lid...... already to plug and go.

The power supplies is main thoughts......back to back maybe on sides...?
Comes with 2 shelves.
I could use a PDU for the power supplies....?

I am thinking along similar lines to Tooms, it might be a bit big. I have my controllers and power supplies in 3 locations so that the distance to the lighting elements is shorter, cutting down on voltage drop and null pixel requirements.
But if it works for your set up then go for it, you could make a very schmick and functional control centre

Not a bad idea, something you could consider is a pull out drawer style setup for the PSU's and controllers, some of the Access Systems we use are starting to give this option so you close the lid and its all secure/tidy, nice look if you ask me.
It all comes down to personal preference, I like having one big enclosure where most of the gear is, but that being said I do have a second controller for my (Mini)mega tree, last year I ran power to it with multiple cables (around 20-30m away) and just had the P2 in the enclosure which worked great but this year I will be putting a PSU in there to try and eliminate so many cables, I really regret not going bigger with my underground conduit.... should have just gone the whole hog and done 100mm.
So think what's going to be easy for you to work in and go for it.

I’ve been searching the archives for an answer - did anyone come up with a workable solution to placing the PSUs in a weather proof enclosure close to the different elements?

I really like the small cabinets in offer from Holiday Coro (CG-1500 Mounting Kit) - but the problem is they’re all the way in the US! Do we not have anything like it here in Oz??
I’m not keen of using large plastic tube (not that they won’t work, just too big and not UV stabilised)...

I am trying to see if can get something similar by using Reticulation controller boxes, IF that is possible...?!?

Not sure yet... They also do a shallower one... But last year I had my main controller and it's power supplies separate... Would be good to be able to put it all in one. So every expansion, controller, etc could have it's own power supplies in the box with them... See how they look when they show up...
