I entered the xmas light competition in our local country town for the second time only.
I did 2 years ago and decided not to until I sorted some stuff out, but was kind of pressured into it.
We are a country town of around 10,000 and the xmas spirit used to be pretty good, but seems to be waning a little.
The first time I entered, I won the best "original" entry and soon come to realise that the judges just pick the most flashing lights, so I didn't enter last year, but heard that there was not many people that did enter.
This year I was told to enter as everyone thought I should win hands down. Even though I have had a hard time getting my display up as I have had a few medical problems, both myself and 2 of my family.
Well, I did enter, and guess what. "best original" winner again.
Problem I have is, everyone in our town runs bunnings / big w lights and lots of them, the only sections in the comp are "best original", "Best overall" and "best new entry"
So as I am the only synchronised display, I think unless I add double the amount of led's and run them on a static run for judging, I am stuck with my title.
Don't get me wrong, I like the title and the $250... But you know... $500 would be nicer.

Who else has something to share? Have we any more winners?

That's the way it is, Last year winner here was a family that live next door to each and had a very nice static display spanning the two houses with lots of lights, but the judging is on Facebook, so it comes down to more the fact how many facebook friends you have instead of the quality and work you put into your show.

So if I make the Final three, I will post here requesting vote as everyone here know the time and effort we put into our show year round!

I hate the fact that Christmas light vomit wins these best Christmas light display awards every year. I too could go to BigW or Bunnings and spend the same on static lights that I have spent on my entire display, cover every inch of my house with random flashing, eye-watering, convulsion inducing lights and win, instead we like to have themes and meanings and purpose behind what we create.

I know that I have carefully designed the look of my light display to have it look a certain way and just adding something random to my display does not fit my plans, I suspect most of the people here are the same.

Hey scamp well done mr
And yes unfortunately I personally think also its however many votes you can drum up ! Via Facebook etc etc .
Perfect example at moment is on Christmaslightsearch! Am very curious how they can create as many votes as they do!
And to be honest good luck to them . Personally we dont do it to win is my wifes passion and if we won something would awesome!
Our display has been on tele and many times in the newspaper over the years. Really here its all about the joy of Christmas.
Our display does have a lot of static (light spew or vomit !) plus a vast amount of computerized pixels and pixels are taking over !
And thats exactly the way we like it .

Have voted, and yes, I also entered the Synergy xmas light trail, which is voted on by the public and I haven't even bothered looking, but would guess I may have 1 vote by now :D . the only reason I really entered, was more the fact they gave a map of all the lights, so thought someone may look there and find mine just so they could drive by :p

I just looked at the leader here and they have over 250 votes they were at 100+ a short time after the finalists were announced, I looked at their facebook at the have 400+ facebooks friends. I don't use facebook very much. Me thinks I will not win. However I do enjoy the hobby and will keep doing shows.

we do it for the kids (big and little). I won ours last year ($100) so that went into the charity collection tin, this year not even sure what's happened,.
overall donations have been down to date as has traffic, I'm in small country town Kadina-SA, and Xmas lights, in general, are waning here as well.
I am the only synchronized display (I think) for 100 km radius, but the smiles on the dials are what makes it worth it.
Merry christmas to all and a happy new year
cheers Boof63

I am with you in that I do it for the kids. This year has been very hard as my father was very ill in November and I also live in a country town but he is in the city, so I spent a lot of time up there, also I had some health issue of my own which has slowed me down to the point that I have not setup a lot of the blowups and window dressings, I even left a few of the older props out of the display in favour of some of the new ones I made this year.
As far as the money goes... Well with the fact I haven't worked much of November and I have medical bills of my own... Sorry charity, I am my own charity this year.
I will be opening up a window and maybe put out some bubble machines this weekend, seeing as it is the last one before xmas. I do enjoy the kids smiles and general excitement when they come in for a look.
