One of my sons works for Big W and showed me some pictures of what they were putting out today.

A lot appears to be the same as last year, but there are some smaller "indoor" (battery operated) light sets that I hadn't seen before.

Some of the solar and battery operated sets may be able to be converted to run off DC controllers.

The strings in 200 LED starter kit, 100 LED extension and 600 LED starter kits only seem to be available in blue, white and multi-coloured.

Here's some of the battery powered sets. They could be used with a standard DC controller with a little hacking.

Here's some of the low voltage (plugpack) and solar sets. These could probably be hacked without too much effort.

Do you have any more info on the LED strings? Price for the 200 and 100 sets? Voltage? Light spacing?

I need to make 15 six metre strings of LED's and 10 six metre strings of icicle lights for my display this year. I need to work out if it's easier and cheaper to get them from Big W or somewhere like vickysun.com. All my existing strings are from Big W, so I'm hoping they'll match with RGBY colours and 9 cm spacing.

200 LED strings are $20, 600 LED strings are $59.

Thanks David. Do you know whether that 18.9 metres includes the 3 metre lead? Just trying to work out the spacing. Do you have a photo of the back of the box?

I assume that like previous Big W sets, they can be cut every two metres.

I don't have any of the new strings, so can only go by the photo.

I take it to mean that the 18.9m total includes the 3m lead-in cable, so that makes the lit length 15.9m and the spacing 80mm.

With the reduced LED spacing, the section length would be reduced to 1.6m (still every 20 LEDs).

Thanks David. That may alter my plans. I'll go to Big W on the weekend and check them out, then do the maths.

Hmmm... the connector looks to be only 2 pins now (middle pin is not metal) ?

If so, that could mean Big W have gone down the same 2-wire path as Bunnings.

It's hard to tell if the wiring at the start of the string is 2 or 3 wires.

David_AVD I think you might be right :(. The 3-wire light sets actually have 5 wires along most of their length and I can't see that in any of the photos. Don't buy these for DC control if there are only 2 wires between the controller and lights.

For the Bunnings example see https://auschristmaslighting.com/threads/6367/
