Do I have my head around it????????

Firstly - awesome forum everyone. Never feel unwelcome.

I am about to take the leap into computer controlled lights and would like to know if I have my head around things.

I have Big W strings - RGB strips - 5050 pixel strips.

After reading all the information on the site I think I would need the following;

To run sequencing on the Big W strings;
computer ---> AVD48 ---> Big W strings / RGB strips.

To run sequencing on the 5050 pixel strips
computer ---> J1SYS ---> 5050 pixel strips.

My main aim is to have the lights work together than just random flashing.

To get the DMX data into the DC48, you'll need either a USB-DMX dongle or an Ethernet-DMX unit.

I think the J1SYS P12S (Ethernet-Pixel board) has a DMX output on it, but not working yet (update to make it work soon?).

You do seem to have the right sort of idea.
There's a whole bunch of controllers that can control the static lights listed at http://auschristmaslighting.com/wiki/Controllers and there's some of the pixel controllers listed on http://auschristmaslighting.com/wiki/Interfaces.
I'm not trying to push my products but if you are looking at going to both static lights and pixels then the 2811DC boards I make are kinda made for this exact purpose.
