After plenty of research and planning I'm just about ready to place my first order with Ray Wu. I thought it would be a good idea to post here first and get some feedback on my plans, the products I've selected and anything I may have missed. (I can't seem to cut and past my order into this post, so please find a link below).

Here's a brief description of the first few elements I'm planning to build;
• House outline using WS2811 strip mounted on conduit in 2.5m sections with black pigtails.
• Existing ropelight star to be converted to pixels. Round WS2811 nodes for this, cable tied to wire frame.
• Metal stars (kmart) converted to pixels. Square WS2811 nodes for this, current battery-operated leds to be removed and holes drilled out to accept 12mm nodes.
http://shoppingcart.aliexpress.com/shopcart/shopcartDetail.htm?spm=2114.13010208.1000002.2.fLlYXe

Appreciate any advice.

Your shopping list link just takes me to an empty shoping cart too presumably because it is linked to your computer with cookies/your login or something. Try posting links to the specific listings instead; you can just copy and paste the URL into your post.

I agree with AAH's suggestion. While not essential, it is easier to use if you buy a tester that uses the same voltage as your pixels.

Another thing is that you can often get a better shipping quote if you contact Ray directly.

Posting your shopping list on the forums is a very good idea.

Thanks for letting me know Alan (and i13), I'm having trouble pasting anything without a bunch of '' which I can't get rid of? I'll have another try linking each individual part.
Thanks for the tip on the inline controller/tester, I've noticed them mentioned a few times and made sure a had one on the list. Particularly useful as I do not have a pixel controller yet (I have ordered an F16V2 in the current group buy), at least I will be able to light up and get building until the falcon board arrives.

Also wanting to add end caps for the strip as I plan to cut it, I couldn't find these as a separate item on the site. Is this something I could request?

Only did my first order with ray a few weeks back..

My tips.. Get your list together and send ray an email to get best shipping price.. Make sure your order total including deliver comes to well under aud$1000 otherwise you may be slugged with import taxes.. I made mine about aud$750 with the intention of making another order in a couple of months.. Be prepared for a bit of a wait, mine should be here monday, which means a 2 week turn around from payment..

And here are your end cap thingys i think..

Looks very good over all. Just be aware that the disadvantages for 12V strips are different to 12V nodes. http://auschristmaslighting.com/forums/index.php/topic,2595.0.html

Some of Ray's 12V nodes have approximately 18mA per colour which is wasteful and reqires regular power injection. If you can get ones that are 10mA per colour/30mA per pixel then they'd be easier to work with and use less power but they're not quite as bright. This thread has an example where they drew too much current and suffered from voltage drop http://auschristmaslighting.com/forums/index.php/topic,7420.msg66750.html#msg66750

You will get voltage drop happening within the cables too which may or may not be enough to cause a problem. Hopefully someone who has used them will post here. I make my own cables.

Those end caps are great. Ray doesn't mind sending you less than the minimum order quantity when you're ordering other items alongside them. Note that about 50% of the end caps don't come with holes in them unless you ask Ray.

When the order arrives, check that Ray has used enough silicone sealant on the ends of the strip.

Please re-post your link to the square nodes too. There are a few types of square nodes but I get bullet style nodes for both of those links.

Thanks i13 and Roosta on the tip about contacting for a shipping quote, the shipping fee calculated on the site does seem fairly high. On the point about keeping the order under $1000, I'm taking the same approach buying parts for my pixel projects first and later I will do another order for some DC/DMX projects. Initially I put all my requirements in one order but total was around $1200 and I had heard that over $1k will attract additional fees/duty. As it stands now the order total is around $650 of parts and $220 in shipping. Do you think I'd be safe with an order at $870 or should I do some more trimming?

Another thing I should have mentioned is if you're using those cheap power supplies, get a spare one because they have been known to occasionally stop working. They'll do the job but I can't recommend them because they're probably not approved for Australian use. Adding up the current/wattage is always a good idea but the values stated on the Aliexpress listings for the lights are usually overestimates. Don't try to use the supply's full 350 watts either.

Not really sure about the tax as I've never placed an order large enough for it to be a problem.

Thanks for this link, that is a great post, makes far more sense to me now. With that knowledge, I will now change my nodes to 5V as this will be better suited to my layout. I plan to use nodes in individual elements such as a wire frame star where the string(s) will be close together. Also I noticed that 5V nodes are cheaper than the 12V equivalent in some cases, that always helps. I had intended to keep everything at one voltage to simplify things as my display grows, but 5V for nodes and 12V for strip is still fairly simply.
