Lighting workshops?

Hi everyone,

So I've decided I will be taking the plunge next year into a small light show.

The question I have is, does anyone know of any workshops/ groups (paid or not) in which lighting fundamentals are taught? Everything from start to display being ready sort of thing.

I know of the minis that are done every year in various locations. I am sort of hoping of something a little more intimate in a small group setting.

Thanks for your help so far. I've managed to start a nice shopping list out of the research I've conducted and a lot of useful tips from a huge amount of threads I've read through.

Thanks heaps! And I look forward to reading about the displays this year.

Hi Matt, welcome to ACL :)
Yes the minis are done and dusted for the year however if you tell us where exactly in QLD you are, there may be someone nearby who can offer some assistance.
You can always check out the ACL Display Locations for anyone active near you too: https://auschristmaslighting.com/locations/

If you have not done so yet, the 101 manual is the first port of call when starting out as it goes over pretty much everything for the hobby in good detail: https://auschristmaslighting.com/threads/auschristmaslighting-101-manual.1889/

Then there's the behind the scenes videos to see how everyone puts on their displays for some more info: https://auschristmaslighting.com/media/categories/behind-your-show.10/

A good one for this time of year if you're looking to get a display going this year is this one:

Good luck with it all :)

I'm located in Brisbane.

I have had a read through the 101 and as helpful as it is, the process does become an overwhelming amount of information to process.

If there happened to be someone out there is brissy willing to sit down with me (and potentially a few others) to go through a few things to get the hang of the major aspects it would be ideal.

In return for the time spent in sure a donation to a display could be made either in cash or in components.

I have had a display up for the past few years consisting of store bought light strings that cost a fortune and were a pain to set up and power.

Thanks heaps

I’m located in Forest Lake in Brisbane, this is my first year also. What parts/components have you gotten so far? My show is ready to go just waiting on more pixels for my mega tree

what’s on your shopping list?

I'm in JImboomba, and like yourself, this is my first year as well with pixel lighting. :)

I've still going to run my old store bought led's this year to fill up the gaps, and replace a lot of them for Christmas 2020.

After the minis or a 1 on 1 with another lights user jumping into Zoom with some of the other users is a great way to talk and learn about lights, controllers, sequencers etc. Of a Friday night it's generally a mostly Aussie session in there. If you jump into ACL chat of a Friday evening there will be a steady succession of people passing through on their way to https://xlights.org/download/1944/ . A microphone and headphones is the optimum to have so you can interact.

G'day, I'm in Forest Lake. First year also and I finally got mine up and running over the weekend. Happy to meet up and chat about my first year as a newbie with all the successes and failures I made along the way. I recommend watching someones sequence of "Hey! Come Look at my House" and listen to the lyrics to get an idea of what you're getting yourself into! Seriously though I watched a lot of the minis from previous years, Canispator Christmas videos and anything from Keith at xLights helped me to stumble my way through to get my display working.
