There is 2 different types, the common one is RGB which has just the red, green and blue leds, the other is an RGBW which has the white leds on there as well.
The RGB lights use 3 channels in Xlights where the RGBW would use 4.

Smart pixels which is what the term pixel will generally refer to have their colour set via data that is sent to it via a pixel controller. They are generally 8 bit devices which allow any of 16 million colours to be rendered from being black (pixels fully off) to white where the red, green and blue channels within the pixel are set to 255.
