I expect the wifi performance will be similar to using one of the small USB dongles. I have a Pi v3 on order and we expect that the next FPP image we create will support it.

Wifi in the old Pi was not good as it was on the USB device. Wifi in built moves it off the USB and gives it better throughput performance and less CPU usage for WiFi, even if its a short distance.

The Linux distributes did not want to support the Pi 1 & 2 as the arm chip was to old for their liking. So Pi 3 should get better support now i.e. More Linux Distributions.

I think that the new onboard WiFi does go through the WiFi controller.
The ethernet connection does.

I got my Pi 3 yesterday.
