Can anybody explain any advantages or disadvantages of these strips? Is it worth the extra $13 to go with the strip that combines the white LED with the RGBs? thanks

I would think that the advantage would be that you would achieve a more genuine white (if that was important to you?) rather than the RGB additive colour mixed white created by equal intensities of the R, G & B.
IMHO, not worth the additional cost for festive lighting.

The other thing you will have to consider is that the software and the hardware you are using will easily support 4 channels per light instead 3 channels per light, some do and some don't.

If you do an eBay search for '4 channel DMX512 decoder' you will find some
