This is pretty simple, and I'm sure someone has already done this but I'll post this anyway.
Last year I wanted to start making some of my own lights, and we like lighting up the house, so I used some thin wood (think it was 10mm square) and drilled/screwed in small metal hooks every 3cm. I have wooden frames so I nailed these wooden strips top and bottom in the frame, then simply hooked up some warm white strings. Each window has 500 LEDs.
Since doing it I've a lot of comments about them. For a starting mod, they were easy to do.
