    Hi all
I was just looking through ebay for some strip lights to get started with. If I understand correctly all WS 2811,12 and 12b are compatible with each other and only require the green wire for data. So I thought I was understanding a bit more. Now there is a WS 2813 that is back to 4 wire but not a clock but dual data wires.
    https://www.ebay.ca/itm/WS2812B-Upg...ally-Addressable-Pixel-Strip-5V-/372047744990
So if I start with something like this do I have to stick with them and now what type of controller? or If I go to the WS2812 can I string these on the end if required.
Thanks for the help I am just getting started and have so many questions.

I haven't followed what the process changes are from 2811 through to 2813 but I think I read somewhere that 2813 has some sort of pixel fail thingy built in. If the pixel fails completely it will still allow data to be passed onto the next pixel in the string/strip. This means you would lose a single pixel in a tree for instance instead of losing every pixel from there on until the end of the string. You will still get individual led failures with the red, green or blue led within the pixel not lighting up or being stuck on.

Ive heard mixed results regarding the ability for this to work as advertised, I suspect that this really depends on the failure mode

So if I am following this correctly then the dual data input is the same data just different feed. Then if there is an ic failure the data will continue on the other data string. Or am I lost?

    What he said!
Quick check with Google, and I think AAH has put it it succinctly. One site did say two duds in a row will terminate the signal though.

This is what the datasheet says;_
"WS2813 is an intelligent control LED light source that the control circuit and RGB chip are integrated in a package
of 5050 components. Its internal include intelligent digital port data latch and signal reshaping amplification drive circuit.
Also include a precision internal oscillator and a 12V voltage programmable constant current control part,
which achieves highly consistent color effect.
The data transfer protocol use single NZR communication mode. After the pixel power-on reset, the DIN port receive
data from controller, the first pixel collect initial 24bit data then sent to the internal data latch, the other data which
reshaping by the internal signal reshaping amplification circuit sent to the next cascade pixel through the DO port. After
transmission for each pixel, the signal to reduce 24bit. Every pixel adopts auto-reshaping transmit technology, making
the pixel cascade numbers are not limited to the signal transmission, only relate to the speed of signal transmission.
The BIN receives the data signal, and then compare the data with the DIN side after phagocytosis of 24bit data, if DIN
do NOT receive the signal, then switching to BIN for receiving the input signal, which ensure that any the IC's damage
does not affect the signal cascade transmission and make the BIN in state of receiving signal until restart after power-off.
Refresh Frequency updates to 2KHz, Low Frame Frequency and no Flicker appear in HD Video Camera.
250us or more of reset time, it won’t cause wrong reset while interruption, it supports the lower frequency and
    inexpensive MCU.
There’re in a choice of 18mA or 5mA current version, and also in a choice of high brightness or cost-effective version.
That is to say, WS2813 is provided with four versions

loks to me like you just join both signal wires together on the controller

I have about 8 rolls of ws2813 here that I was going to use and never did as my controller didn't support it at the time.
We did have a play with it at a gathering on a falcon controller and connecting 1 or both data wires makes the string work however we never really tested "damaging" a controller chip to see what effect it had on the string.

My sandevice controller does now support them however I still haven't used them and I got them in 2016 and they are still in the box they came in. I might have a play with them this year as I wanted to add them to my sleigh for the outline and I might just get that done this year. will have to play with an offcut piece and see what I can make happen with them. In theory it sounds great as 1 failure won't take out the whole string but as others have said 2 failures and your done for.

Thanks for all the input guys. I think I have a better understanding of the ic in these strings now. I do like the idea of one failure not taking out the whole string.

Wow, not the best translation to bring clarity to the question. "Phagocytosis" is a cell biology thing not a data handling thing.
