Adafruit makes sure they are selling reliable usb to serial devices. On Amazon, Hi-Letgo and DTECH would be the vendors I look at.

The first one I bought was from Hi-Letgo, then next batch was from ATNSINC , both via Amazon. And I couldn't figure out how to contact them to see if they could resolve the problem. Hopefully the adafruit module will work, but if not, at least I can contact them.

Interesting. Mine from hi-letgo (ok 3 years old) worked fine.

Yeah this looks like something recent. Possibly due to the "chip shortages" in the last couple years. lots of counterfeit and pirate chips hitting the market i guess.
