I might just go with alarm wire then...I can get 5 strand stuff and be able to do what I want.

Yes, on a pixel controller output, the data (and clock) signal does need to daisy chain in and out of all pixels.
If you were to Y them at any point, the connected strings would be duplicated (channel wise) from that point on.
