Hello Brains trust,

I'm from Adelaide in south Australia.
I'm looking for tips or even where to start purchasing. I have had a brief look at the 101 guide but I think I'm more confused lol.

I want to get started, no idea where.
I want to start small, maybe a tree an stars eg.
Eventually played to music
Prob. RGB bullet style for eg.
I don't really have a budget as I know I won need to out lay alot initially to start small, then I'll add more as more confidence builds.

Thankyou

Welcome!

There are some good resources on YouTube if you learn better that way. Canispater Christmas has a very entertaining series that has helped a lot of people get started, including me. Just realize that his videos are older now, so information on controllers will be different and You'll need to look into that elsewhere.

The chat here is also a good resource. There are almost always people active there to answer questions or chat about a project.

I would start with downloading xLights and creating a layout. Once you've done that, you'll know how many pixels you need and what controllers would work with your layout. You'll also have a decent idea what it will all look like on your house.

Once you have that information, you can start looking to purchase a controller, pixels, and power supplies. There are some places in Australia that sell some of these things (you'll have to ask someone else for details on those because I'm in the US), or you can order them from China either through AliExpress or directly from the vendors. Scott LED posts on the forums here and is a reputable vendor for pixels. You should be able to find them by searching.

As far as budget goes, just a tree and stars can still cost in the thousands of dollars depending on what kind of tree you want to build, what controller you run, etc. Setting a rough budget now will help when making decisions about how much to build this year, and may help keep you from having uncomfortable conversations with your significant other about just how much you spent.

Welcome @Myatt01 If you hadn't seen it -- there's a small meetup happening in Adelaide next month that would be worth attending.
