first project

My first project i would to do is a led matrix board at first i thought i do a ping pong ball version measuring 4 feet by 2wide using 12mm pixel lights but as i found more and more websites i realized i needed serious help in this matter.first the different types of lights ws2801 or ws2811 then theirs the problems of figuring out the different models i want to be able to program various colors pattern in my project.also their are different sizes lights that have domes on them that would forgo the need for ping pong balls to diffuse the colors .then i need to figure out how much power i will need and most importantly trying to keep it as simple as possible to .thanks any help will be greatly appreciated warwick8

I'm not one of the pros here but my first guess is 2811 will be suggested.

If you haven't found it yet the AusChristmasLighting 101 manual is a great resource for most all things low voltage and RGB

Lots of friendly folks here will be glad to help you with your matrix.
Where are you located? That will help on suggestions as to equiptment that may be more local to you.
