Great place to start is the 101 manual, it's a lot to take in.
This time of year is about right to start buying lights.
Plenty of Youtube channels too; like Canispator Christmas which is a great one.
Ask questions in the forums here or live chat.

Seeing the actual lights in person and speaking to someone is a massive heads up. There's a few ACL users who have their Cairns displays tagged on the display locations link at the top of the page. There's a mini lighting expo planned for Brissie coming up but that may be a bit far to go from FNQ.
There's lots of links to suppliers etc in the ACL101 and I have lots of blinky gear on my website.
