Im wanting text going up a tree (or matrix), e.g

As there are only 2 lines how do I go about doing that? I can choose the first line to go in UP direction and thats fine but when I choose the 2nd line to do that it overlaps the first line, on both the tree and matrix.

Is my only option to go left/right?

if you add text on effect 2 and then use average as the layering method you will have 4 lines of text. it may not get you totally what you want. you can have 4 words all going in different directions, for example.
