I have posted a similar post in another area however I have had a few responses now with mixed results:

The specs of the strip are:

Item Features:
This LED strip is wrapped by a silica gel hose which provide excellent water and dust proof Low power consumption, Super-bright but running with low temperature All the light spread and completely smooth, luminous very even LED Type: 1 WS2811 IC control 3 LED Chip,
Long lifespan >50,000 hours Available in different fixed colors and RGB (133changing modes can be realized) Controller is designed for the magic led strip which can be available133 modes Certified by both RoHS / CE / FCC
Specifications:
LED Type: 5050 + WS2811 IC Power Consumption: 30leds/m
pixels/m: 10pixels/m Working Voltage: 12V Protection grade: IP66;waterproof in silicon tube;white pcb
Color: full color RGB;256gray scale Viewing angle: 120° storage temperature: -20°to 50° Size ( L X W X H ): 5000 x 10 x 2.5 mm
Please help.........................

Yeah but wouldn't that one section of three led's be 9 channels?

I am using the 2811 and as a 5m roll has 150 pixels and 450 channels......

So each led is 3 - Red Green Blue.....?

but ws2811 strips are controllable in 3 led lots so each 3 led lot can only be the same mix of colours at any time, so instead of RGB it would be RRR for red etc. Dont worry it confused the hell out of me first year. I still have arguments about universes per output...

Just in that one sentance you just made it all make sense....thanks Heath....thats why there is one chip per thre 50/50...

YAY...

oh yeah my bad - to early to think

I have 3 x mini trees of one universe - 3 x 50 pixels - not 150 each............ so yeah - COFFEE TIME....... double hit please...... :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

Yes am certain most of us have been caught in that trap my first experience with 2811 30 per metre strips also toook me a little while to workout as physically counted 150 pixels per strip so one assume 450 channels Wrong eventually realised controlled in sections of 3 so for programming purposes is 50 pixels per strip and 150 channels 8)

for addressable strips, a better way to think out it is not the number of leds on the strip, but the number of chips (remembering ws2812 has the chip inbuilt). Each chip is assigned 3 channels.

So, count the chips, and multiply by 3, there's your channel count :)
