Hi everyone... long time lurker - first time poster!

read the guide and figured i'd use 5V ws2812b led strips to start off for various reasons - am having buyers remorse as there seems to be far more options when it comes to 12V. typical. Anyways, I bought 4x5m rolls to have a decent crack at different things throughout the year and they won't go astray.. I have a PSU too.

I'm no good with electronics and not really keen on second guessing and buying twice. So I have a couple of questions if I may:

1) PSU power cord - where do I get one from? can I cut up the cord from the old kettle? I checked Bunning and Jaycar..

2) the psu (meanwell RSP-320-5) has 3 +V/-V terminals.. does that mean i can connect 3 different things? Can I connect 2 controllers to one set of terminals?

I have a rPi from used as an HTPC which I plan to use so I guess all i need now is a controller.

3) Is there much difference between pixlite 16 or Falcon 16v3? Since I'm using rPi/FPP.. is it better just to go with the Falcon board?

4) Any recommendations for an outdoor enclosure?

Appreciate any assistance and thanks in advance.. hopefully I don't throw in the towel by December!!

Hi cdallen,

Welcome to the start of an awesome hobby!

So far you have the correct way to go just be careful on how you execute!

1) PSU power cord - where do I get one from? can I cut up the cord from the old kettle? I checked Bunning and Jaycar..
For this yes you can just cut the "Kettle end" off the cable and use that with the standard wiring of Brown being Live (Hot) Blue being Neutral and Yellow/Green being earth. (IT IS VERY IMPORTANT AT THIS STAGE YOU KNOW HOW TO WIRE THESE AS IT MAY RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH). scary part over.

Here is a photo of my Power supply (I use Kettle plug extension cables) This was my first test and I highly recommend using spade connectors on the wiring.

2) the psu (meanwell RSP-320-5) has 3 +V/-V terminals.. does that mean i can connect 3 different things? Can I connect 2 controllers to one set of terminals?
The 3 terminals are really so you can load up the power supply as they are all "Common Terminals" (All link together) this is so you can distribute separate cables to different boards (Note: all three must not exceed 300 watts.)

3) Is there much difference between pixlite 16 or Falcon 16v3? Since I'm using rPi/FPP.. is it better just to go with the Falcon board?
This question is really personal preference. just like buying a mac or PC. I personally use falcon boards as I found it to be more new user friendly compared to the pixlite controllers. (Determination by online google before investing). The FPP will control both as the PI sends out E1.31 data which both boards take so its is really up to you and your budget. I also like Falcon boards because the support here is fantastic a large sum of us here use falcon boards.

4) Any recommendations for an outdoor enclosure?
Me personally use a three phase distribution board salvaged from a demolition. (It is not weather rated but stays under cover). Its really up to what you can find or how much money you want to spend. Some things to note when looking for an enclosure is getting rid of heat. (Having a large enclosure is an option or having vent holes.

I hope this answers your questions and feel free to ask as many as you want so you feel confident. Come into the chat and ask questions to get a quicker response. You will find everyone here is very helpful!

Thanks

Officially welcome to ACL cdallen!
Derf has pretty much covered off your questions already.
My 2c: I have a Falcon board (F216v2) and it has worked quite well for 2 years so far. I've not personally used Pixlite however there are quite a number of users on ACL that do, so one is not better than the other really.
Enclosures can be made of almost anything. I use Kmart containers that are not waterproof on their own, but if placed under cover away from weather or if you cover them with something else (I use corflute boxes that I made to look like giant presents) they do nto get any weather in. And yes ventilation is something to consider, particularly in the harsh Aussie climate.
Where abouts are you located? Maybe add this to your profile and you may find other members nearby. And don't forget to get yourself to a Mini meet, to see first hand products and hear how others build their displays.
Cheers, Graham
