I do think that Firefox has been getting a bit hungry lately as well. It seems to be noticably hungry if it hasn't been closed in a fair while.

The reality is that anything you buy will be significantly better than what you have.
Uninstall all the vendor provided rubbish that looks for updates on boot up. I have been running various Lenovo for a number of years, good solid machines and performance is dramatically better if you remove all their assistant apps.
Have resisted posting to this as so much of laptop experience is emotive, in the old days we used to benchmark against the apps we wanted to use to get a reality check over the vendors claims.
My favourite laptop is a 7 year old Macbook Pro, with Retina display, but then again, my favourite desktop it running Linux.
