Happy New Year!

With Christmas behind us, some site upgrades will be rolled out in the coming days or weeks. The site could be unavailable briefly at the point that the upgrades get pushed out, however this isn't expected to last long.

Dark mode

This January a dark mode is coming! Once available you will be able to toggle dark mode on/off by clicking the toggle button at the bottom left of the page and choosing the switch to dark mode/switch to light mode link:

Here’s a teaser for dark mode:

Dark mode has been on our radar for some time but has been held back by poor text readability when font colour BB code is used. The good news is we’ve now devised a solution that will retain the ability to apply font colours to your posts and (particularly) chatroom messages.

This solution is a compromise whereby font colours choices will be reduced to 25 colour presets (see first picture below). The reason for this limitation is that very dark colours are hard to read on dark backgrounds, and the same for light colours on light backgrounds. Some processing will be done to lighten/darken selected colour presets slightly to improve readability between the light and dark styles. In the chat room, custom message colour choices will also change to only support preset colours (see second picture below). I hope these compromises are acceptable to enable a usable dark mode choice.

Display videos section tweaks

Our display videos section will receive some minor tweaks shortly. These tweaks are to allow custom titles for standalone animations (videos that do not contain vision of lights synchronised to music) plus add a new third type for static displays. Additionally, a new selectable filter is coming that can only show videos of synchronised, animation or static displays. Standalone animations and static displays will have a label to identify them, for example:

Lastly, there is an unrelated bug fix for an issue that sometimes prevents on-site alerts and push notifications being sent for newly added videos (for those who have watch notifications enabled for new display video submissions).

Three new trophies

And finally, alongside the existing one-year trophy, there are now two new trophies for five and ten year registration anniversaries, just to highlight how long some of you (and us!) have been here. My oh my how Christmas lighting has evolved during this time – ten Christmases ago in 2012 I had just added RGB for the first time … and that was dumb RGB, not pixels!

To round it out , a third trophy has been created to recognise those who have dipped their toes into each the major sections of AusChristmasLighting – not just posting in the forums and chat, but the media gallery and wiki, display videos and display locations.
