no Ethernet light on pi

setting up for first time since last xmas, i am trying to move the pi from wifi to Ethernet. the pi will not connect via either and the Ethernet port does flash or light up. Is it cactus ?
 
tested with known good cables but still no flashy lights
 
Ethernet won't light up if the OS isn't booting.
Reseat your microSD card once or twice. (Contacts may have oxidized over the year) Failing that can you plug it into a screen and see if it runs through the bootup sequence.
If it doesn't do anything then maybe flash a new SD Card
 
tried the SD in out trick, no joy :( now it is a little darker i can see faint glow from port, not bright but a faint glow from both sides, no flicker. will try hooking up a monitor

Is the red led bright and the green one flashing. If they are dull you might have a power supply issue.
 
red is good. green next to it is good but not trying to send wifi, was thinking the same about power, currently running of cheep usb supply, will investigated
