What: Nutcracker Tutorial:

Agenda:

• Will discuss changes to Nutcracker over the last week.
• We will be showing how to do a local install of xamp
  Xampp. http://sourceforge.net/projects/xampp/files/latest/download. 32 bit for Windows xp, 64 bit for Windows 7 or 8
  In preparation for talk please download xampp
  We will walk through the steps together. When we are finished you will be generating your show from your local machine. You need about 1gbytes of free disk space
• New feature in projects that allows a spreadsheet view of all your effects

So, I only have one flavor of code. php. In order to get it to work on your local host you need apache and mysql, just like nutcracker123.com has.


So same code, two different environments. This is todays Nutcracker.


I am looking to see if i will change my architecture.


xLights is C++ and wxWidgets. It can be compiled under linux,mac and windows. Entire code < 5mytes.


Current Nutcracker php code < 10mbytes. If you want to run it locally you need to install 950mbytes of apache, mysql and other stuff from the WAMP/XAMPP install.


If i change Nutcracker to C++, it will get way faster, maybe 10-100 times faster. xLights has no database. This means if 1000 users use xLights, you would never see a gallery of others. Currently you can easily coipy what others have done. So i am looking to get Nutcraclker123.com as a central database and use the C++ Mysql connector. If this works out, future Nutcracker could be <10mbytes on your windows machine AND have a gallery that you can copy from the central database. What happens if you dont have internet connectivity? I want the code to work in offline mode where data is stored in local xml files until you connect later.


Will xLights and Nutcracker merge? Don't know, but i am guessing no. I am thinking the backend effects will be identical. I want if i develop a new effect, it is available in xLights right away. I will work with Matt on this. I was hoping I could also make the effects i generate also interchangeable with HLS, LSP, Vixen 3 and LOR. I need to open talks with all of their developers and see.


"You always introduce a defect when you solve one" is a Six Sigma motto we have. If Nutcracker becomes a nutcracker.exe file, you wont be able to run it on your iphone or ipad. Today, i run nutcracker while at Starbucks. Small price to pay for the higher performance.


Also C++ will make it easy to add avi files into nutcracker along with playing the mp3 music as you are looking at an effect. Both of these are very hard in php.


So stay tuned, there may be a new version of nutcracker coming out in next month or so
