Possible new ws2812 strip?

I know many here are members of other lighting sites and may have already seen this, but I'm sure there are many who aren't/haven't, so I thought I should share this. I am hoping to do a version of plasma icicles this year and have started to put together a list of materials and have even received a quote from Ray. Then I found this post on DIYC.
New variation WS2812 Strip?
I will be following this with interest. This could help in many applications and the hope is this may be adapted to other strip as well.
