Hi Guys,

Very new to this. I am looking to run 8 of these Dumb RGB lights - https://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/5m-DC24V-input-led-neon-flexible-4-wired-with-3-color-RGB-Size-13-26mm-120LEDs/701799_32301597712.html on one of these LOR controlers - http://store.lightorama.com/cmdedcca3.html

My question is how do I work out what power supply I need and where can I purchase. I am super new so happy to pay more for something that is as close to plug and play as possible.

Thanks for your help

The neon flex is rated at 11.52W per meter. Therefore you are getting 40m of it = 460.8W.

You could either get 2 of these - https://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/NES-350-24-24V-350W-meanwell-switch-mode-led-power-supply-AC100-240V-input-24V-350W/701799_2037994725.html

or one of these - https://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/12V-24V-48V-600W-switch-mode-power-supply-size-238-124-65mm-led-driver-led-power/701799_593827746.html

However, it really depends on how far you are going with it. You also need to make sure that the controller can handle it, 5m of neonflex is 57.6W/2.4A so you should be ok as the controller allow 4A per channel.

Ray has plenty of PSU's :)

Hi Mossie,

Just to throw a spanner in your works mate..

Being a newbie, you may not be aware of all the options available in blinky land..

For similar money to your plans, ie ~$1000 you could get a pixel show happening which allows much more flexibilty and flare to your sequencing..

Any ways there is heaps of info and people to help on the forum, so welcome..

Cheers..

Being that our dollar is bouncing around so much at the moment, you may also be able to find power supplies on ebay that are cheaper.
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/AC-110V-220V-TO-DC-24V-480W-20A-Regulated-Transformer-Power-Supply-For-LED-Light-/141594352840?hash=item20f7ae5cc8:g:R44AAOSwPYZU-GKf
this was just a quick search, but if you used this be very careful that you do not run full white too much as it is very close to the limit and generally you want a bit of leeway with power rating.
I tend to buy 2 anyway as if you do have a problem with 1, you still have a backup.

I have to agree with Roosta here; it's just not nice wishing you'd bought something else. Even if you don't choose pixels (which I highly recommend as you'll probably replace everything with them sooner or later), there is plenty of room to save money. Light-O-Rama controllers are relatively expensive and I'm sure Ray would supply a dumb RGB version of this if you asked him to https://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/2-5m-DC12V-WS2811-led-neon-pixel-light-RGB-full-color-30leds-m-with-10pixels-m/701799_32607732278.html
All he'd have to do is put an ordinary dumb RGB strip into the neon outer tubing so I'd still expect the price to be around US $10 for a 2.5 metre length. It would only be single sided though.

That said, any neon tubing might be a problem if the lights go faulty and need repairing. I'd imagine that it would be difficult to get a good repair.

I dont know about RGB neon-flex but my 3 faces are made from plain white neon-flex (80led p/m). Made them 4 years ago and still going strong, no fixes at all required.

Love the idea of the smart pixels but this will be my first time programming and with 2 young kids have very limited time to learn something so overwhelming.

Sorry - 1 more question.

How do I tell if I would be able to run 8 of these off the LOR controller I mentioned above - https://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/simple-dump-RGB-Icicles-12V-light-string-total-69nodes-all-white-wire-IP68-rated/701799_32282280619.html

and if I purchase 2 of https://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/NES-350-24-24V-350W-meanwell-switch-mode-led-power-supply-AC100-240V-input-24V-350W/701799_2037994725.html will that be enough to power the board?
