Mounting strips to roof - what to use?

I originally mounted my strips on the roof with some mounting hooks from bunnings, but the adhesive seems to wear off in the heat.

Any other ideas? I was thinking a staple gun, but the staples seem too narrow.
 
Make sure you clean the roof under each mount. It is very time consuming but I had the silastic fail on a significant number of mounts because I didn't. That was on a zincalume roof. You will have to allow time for the "glue" to dry before tying anything to them as well. If your roof is coloured then spray paint the top of the mounts before you put them up so they don't stand out as much.
you will still see them just not as bad.
 
silicone is a bit hit & miss with some plastic clips but selleys liquid nails clear building adhesive works incredibly well, even on brick. So well in fact I'm not actually sure how I'm going to get some of those clips off :)
 
I used liquid nails and after a year or so it became brittle and some clips simply fell off when I tried to use them the following year. Not saying silicone is completely fail safe either, but I seem to have better success with that over the liquid nails.

i have an old roof, chalky concrete tiles. Silicon didnt work, even after cleaning/wire brush. I did use some clear epoxy type stuff, but i have noticed a lot of them failed when i tried to re-tie the strips this year.
 
Like you, I started off using stick on clips, and found that in the heat, they would just lift. I used liquid nails and like what DJ said, the clips fell off. I have a collection of them in the water tank now... I then changed to 20mm conduit clips screwed to the colour bond roof with silicone at the base. All my lights are attached to 20mm conduit. I do this as my roof display does not usually change from year to year and its easy to clip the conduit on and off. These are permanent and this is my 3rd year on the roof with no issues. This year I tried magnets to the bottom of the clips so I could look at moving the display around on the roof these year. I have failed to find a glue to hold the magnets to the bottom of the clips. The magnets are strong enough to hold to the roof and some have been successful, but a lot of the magnets did not hold to the clips.. Thinking of using insulation tape to wrap around the clip and the magnets, but that is for next year now.
 
I'm hoping the cable tie clips I got are strong enough to stay stuck for the month, but we'll see. I think the main problem with the hooks I had is that the strip itself was exerting a fair bit of pressure on the top of it, causing it to peel off, and when one hook went, the pressure on all the other ones caused them to fall of quicker and quicker.

Hopefully now with the cable tie clips, the pressure is a bit more evenly distributed, and they won't pop off as quickly.
