I've drawn up two different power injections that will work depending on if you are using the same power supply, or if you are using different power supplies for the second string. See if this is how you are wiring it.

Would using Network cable work? Was thinking 1 pair for each output - 1 data & 1 ground. Would get me 4 outputs in one cable?

XLights is the main program used. It’s free and you can have a play around before you get in to deep and buy a bunch of controllers and power supplies. There are also lots of free sequences on the xLights Google drive that are a good place to start.
