I had an interesting conversation with my local Community Trust after they left a note in my mailbox asking for help.

As soon as the call was explained, my gut feeling told me this might not be the best path to go down.

They want to replace the old, aging, Christmas tree in the main street with a Megatree. It’s a lovely idea and would definitely look great, and I’d be willing to help with the project as they've asked. However, the ongoing maintenance and potential repairs could become a real headache if things don’t go as planned.

They mentioned that every time they put up or take down the current tree, it costs them NZD $4000 for traffic management and health & safety measures.

The trust is largely unfunded and relies on local support and businesses to stay afloat.

I’m curious to hear what others think about this idea, or if there might be alternative options they could explore. Don’t get me wrong, it could be amazing, but it also has the potential to turn into a major costly headache.

Sounds like a chance to design and build a tree bigger and stronger than the types found in household Christmas displays, design in redundancy so parts can easily be swapped or fixed without having to leave the ground, i.e long poles, some way to climb up inside to release parts if needed. Unfunded or not, it's going to be expensive as it's not going to be installed on private property so needs to be robust.

Dam!!! you have me thinking lol
as light failure and the replacement of what would really need to be whole strips to make it quicker and easier is the overwhelming concern
