Check out a behind the scenes video of our first computerised Christmas display;

2016 Walkthrough/Behind the Scenes - YouTube

View: https://youtube.com/watch?v=nUg-CD4e7Fo

When I first decided to take on this hobby I couldn't get enough of behind the scenes videos, walk-throughs and how-to's. It was great to be able to see all the various bits of equipment, how they work together and the sorts of lights and decorations being built, I really got a lot out of it. I've learned so much this this year and following a successful first sequenced/computerised show in 2016, I thought it was a good time to post a vid of my own and hopefully share some knowledge and ideas.

All questions, feedback and comments are welcome.

Great video and display mate, well done! I was going to ask if your display was still up to have a look but I've seen it all in the video now!

Great video, your first box is very neat.
Good display, makes my first year effort look pitiful :(.

great job for a first year looking forward for next year
Thanks, yes I'm looking forward next year too, got plenty of ideas to work on through the year, just got to figure out how to fund it, lol.

Cheers Graham, did you catch that shout out in the intro "locals in the area showing me around when I started"? Thanks again mate, you were the first one to reach out when I joined ACL, appreciate it. Thanks again too for the song mash up, it was the star of the show! Pity I couldn't post a video of that sequence but I got a bunch of copyright warnings from youtube, I've got it recorded though I'll get a copy to you at some stage.
Yes most of the display is still up, not running now but yet to pull it all down, although I had to bring a few things in today before that storm! All stayed pretty dry through the month but that was a LOT of rain this arvo, I'll probably pack it up tomorrow hopefully I don't find any damage. All good in your yard?

Thanks OzAz, yes I put plenty of time into that controller box but I figure it will be the backbone of the display for many years (with any luck) so worthwhile. I was pretty enthusiastic this year, lol. Might be different next year, probably all held together with blutack and gaffer tape which is more my usual style.

Sorry about that - I've been meaning to make a video like that for the last few years :)

Looks like you're on the right track though. Colour coding - and the interchangeable standardization is a very good idea too.

Hi Brad, seriously I still can't get enough of those videos, it's like some sort of obsession, lol!! It'd be great to see a bts of your display if you ever do, particularly the wifi interactivity, that's really unique.

Colour coded cables and interchangeable sections were a few ideas I was really keen to implement for my display, along with the central controller box with room for expansion. Prior to 2016 we had a static/store-bought display going back many years so I did have some experience and starting with pixels and sequencing this year gave me a rare chance to start over, clear the slate so to speak and plan a little better.

Thanks for taking the time and effort to give back to the community because without people like you taking the time and effort to do this then this community wouldn't be what it is.

Cheers Eddy, thanks for the kind words. I've found so much support, knowledge and inspiration from ACL and the blinky community and I'm grateful to all that contribute, if I can give back or pay it forward in any way I will.

Excellent video David. It was great to see the star in action, after you bought it to the mini last year. I think a lot of new people will find this very helpful. Shane.

Cheers Shane, yes really pleased with how the old star worked out. Highly recommend if anyone has some old wireframe props to add some pixels, gives them a whole new life and you can do so much more with them.

I hope some new folks do find the video useful, I know when I was first learning some stuff made sense when I read it but other things I just had to see before it clicked for me.

How did your dalek mini trees work over Christmas? Those things were great at the mini.
