I'm not an expert on pixels but you're probably best of going with 2811 style pixels from Ray Wu in China and a J1-Sys pixel controller.

Most people are going with pixels but strip could be used

You'll also need a power supply or 2. These can be top quality Meanwell brand that you can get through David_AVD on his site or Ray Wu sells some cheap equivalents.

At this time of year you can expect delivery of stuff from China to be maybe 3 weeks which isn't going to leave much time for setup and experimentation.

Also LOR is something of a biatch when it comes to doing pixel elements. There are LOR props that you can download from the lor forums but with only a few weeks between now and when lights usually get switched on you may be better off not drawing up the tree in visualiser but instead just using Nutcracker to generate effects. There's a section of the forums dedicated to Nutcracker.

By the time you pay for the pixels, freight for the pixels, power supplies and freight,a pixel board and freight for it you're not likely to get too much change out of a $1000 for a 12 string tree. That's a lot cheaper than using CCRs but it's still a reasonable investment

Thanks for the quick response. I'm looking ahead to next year for the tree , so you think E1.31 would be the protocol ? To work with LOR .

A 12 strand tree is 600 pixels which is 1200 channels which is about 2 1/2 universes of dmx data. For more than 1 or 2 universes there really is no other option than E1.31.
