ECG 12X Test Pattern

Is it okay to switch the jumper to turn on the test pattern without turning off the power. I've been turn off the power when i want put on the test pattern. Just wondering if I have to.

its always best to power down first

No harm, but not sure if it changes state in real time or only reads it at boot time?
