Well day 1 almost done and feet are sore. There are 21 halls each as big as Jeff's shed (if you count upstairs and downstairs separately) and each full of lighting companies. According to the visitors guide the halls have different themes for lighting but cannot really tell as every hall is a mixture of all sorts of lighting.

Today we visited 8 halls.

A few comments:

Dong Yu Lighting had a forest of LED trees which looked magical. They make LED string lights, rope lights, meteor lights, LED strip lights, motifs and some of the cutest snow men I have seen.

There was a similar display at Zhongshan Guangdong Dong Yu Lighting Factory with some nice small meteor lights ideal for hanging from your spouting.

Lots of companies with LED strip lighting but all pretty standard RGB stuff and only a couple of companies with pixel strips. Nothing to shout about so far.

RGBW is becoming popular as people want better whites.

There are still an amazing number of flourescent tube makers despite the rapid advance in LED lighting.

Some of the LED downlights lights on the Panasonic stand were just wonderfull with better looking light than any conventional lighting I have seen.

Architectural lights are everwhere - a couple will be coming to our office entrance soon...

Lighting poles with integrated winches for lifting up industrial lighting

LED street lighting is dominant and I saw one with integrated wind turbine (600W) and solar panel.

Tommorrow we have more halls to search through....

Ok Day 3 and I am done.

Generally the lighting companies fall into a few categories

1. Commercial Indoor Lighting - All types of indoor LED and flourescent (yes they still have it) lighting. Bulbs, Candle lights, tubes, downlights etc. Big new product is flat panels (mostly white but some RGB) with edge lit plastic. Everybody had them. Lots of new types of LED's for these. Otherwise it is amazing how many white lights there are.

2. Commercial Outdoor lighting - Lots of flood lights of all types, wall washers and spot lights. Every imaginable way to light up the outside of buildings and bridges. Lots of DMX. This overlaps with Architectural lighting and a huge number of outdoor light shapes and sizes. RGBW is the big mover with much better whites. Colour is in!

3. Street, Tunnel and Factory Lighting - These guys have amazingly big lights. LED dominates with new products. Street lighting is pretty much all in die cast housings and designed for bolting to posts. Factory lighting has lots of LED arrays used to replace halogen lights. Energy saving is the key for these. Some really very fancy street lights.

4. Traditiona Lighting - This covers Christmas lighting and also LED Trees. Not a huge number of companies showed these lights but many had a stand but chose to show their commercial lighting instead. Maybe 20 or so companies showed festive lighting. The quality of LED strings is really improving with many new ways to injection mould them on display. Meteor lights wree a big hit RGB Net lights and RGB strings were poular.

5. LED Strips & pixels - Hard to categorize these as they were on a lot of stands (>100) with mostly dumb single colour or RGB strips. Many companies had them mixed in with their other lights. There were a few companies targetting the "Disco" market - pretty ugly stuff - and a lot of companies with all sorts of LED PIXEL grids. Very few companies had pixels. There were two or three and some companies making controllers.

6. Sub suppliers - Making everything from power supplies to all sorts of parts for lights, LED makers and LED machine makers. Plastic suppliers, glass suppliers and all types of metal heatsink and die castings.

So now I have a very nice spreadsheet of suppliers and their contacts .......
