I'm too broke for a nice light set up of my own right now, but I love looking at them. I'm excited for the upcoming season to see some displays now that I know this forum exists! Based in VIC AU.

Welcome to the forum.
A cheap way to get started with pixels can be an ESP32 development module flashed with WLED, and a few strings of pixels.
All can be bought from AliExpress/China and wired together.
There's also some pre-made controllers using an ESP32 chip. Such as the ESPixelStick.
Willingness to learn electronics and soldering is very helpful in this hobby.

For $100 you could be up and running with a couple of hundred leds to deck out a few bushes, letterbox, front fence etc or even your Christmas tree. Seed pixels are insanely cheap (think about 6-8 cents per led) and a controller like mentioned above esp32 etc, if DIY isn't your thing, I would check out Quinled https://quinled.info/ as he makes some pretty decent perfect for beginners hardware.
Example; USB powerbank (or usb phone charger) and a Dig2Go and a string of seed pixels, portable or easy to hide, can be easily setup to respond to music/sound if you don't want to use xlights for live control
