Just need an advice what specs of laptop is needed to run an x light software . I have a desktop around 9 years old but usually the x light software is kind of hanging and not working properly. the memory is not full and one of my friend told me it’s a processor ( kind of old ) . So i’m planning to buy a seperate laptop to run them xlight alone . Can anyone please tell me what should be the minimum specs as maybe someone had tried already ? many , thanks, ernie

I have a 6th-gen i7 (they're now up to 11th gen I think) with SSD from about 2015 and it works great. I've also run it on an older (10+ years) i7 with spinning disk and it didn't have a problem.

Generally I advise to stay away from the super-budget variations of anything, which now includes Pentiums, Atoms and so on. Try and get an i3, i5, or equivalent AMD, as recent generation as possible to future proof yourself a little bit. You can look at "last years" specials on any big retailer or OEM. I've even seen decent laptops going on marketplace for just a few hundred.

Agreed with Iain - I run xLights on three machines
* A circa 2016 i7-6600 (16gb) laptop running Linux
* A Macbook Pro Early-2015 model (8gb)
* A c2020 i7-10700 Windows Desktop (32gb)

All are very suitable for the size of my display and there's not much difference in rendering times between them.

hi everyone, just a new laptop. what is basically to copy from the old computer and pasted to the new one so all that have been started from before csn be copied completely? thanks, ernie

If you have sequences already rendered / saved with your layout, it takes a little more to setup the first time - you need to remap all of the paths to the images, videos, effects etc.

Ron Howard runs through it here in a recent video (note, I haven't sat through this one so hopefully it's exactly what you need).

When you install xlights, it asks for a directory path and the standard install keeps everything in that folder (usually called xlights) - Inside that directory there should be a config file - Unless someone else can confirm earlier, I will advise the name(s) of these files when I am back in front of my personal laptop this evening. Copying them across into the new computer in the same default directory and restarting the program is all that is required.

many thanks!

If you have sequences, they are probably within that same folder structure. Just copy the whole folder to your new computer.
