New to this kinda of light set ups. Any information on how to for dummies would be a great help? We have already won our local display with just your normal plug in to power lights just used a crap load of them and was great but keen to get into animating things not too flash with electronics setting up tho so yeh may need a bit of help

Best advice to learn all about animated lights is to download and read the 101 manual: https://auschristmaslighting.com/threads/auschristmaslighting-101-manual.1889/
You may need to read it multiple times for some parts to sink in, but if you have any questions about any specifics, have a look through the forum, or post your own thread with the plans you have and what items you'd like to get and ask for feedback/advice.
You can always jump into chat at any time of the day, there's always someone around.

A good first place to visit is a read of 101 manual don't buy anything until you've had a read and a chat with a few of the other users. Best to find out who's using what in your neck of the woods.

Good to see another Kiwi getting involved in the obsession (there's not many of us here across the ditch). There is a ton of help here to get started and as Kev suggested, find out who might be nearby with an animated display to get some ideas or help.

Yeh there is nobody here in our little town that does animated displays so would love to get on the band wagon and learn it for 2019 xmas
 
Welcome to ACL... Lots to learn, but take you time and you'll get your head around it.. Plenty of people here to help answer you questions.
