After all these years,
My big Fibreglass control cabinet needed to have a light inside it..
Now I did think to have a Manual Switch, or even a Mechanical Switch attached to the door..

But that's not over thinking it enough..
So i build the Magnetic Switch, to turn on my led strip.

First the testing Stage , Magnetic Switch, Relay, an Resistor, an it works

Now to build the Complete Thing

Now i Dont have to Flick a switch to turn the light on.

Couldn't you just run the 12V for the led through the mag switch to simplify? They sell NO/NC versions at Jaycar.

It would depend upon the reed switch device regarding its switching current and voltage. I think I would agree with you in this situation though. Most leds pull 20 mA or less which most reeds should be able to handle. Not being inductive in nature a led would not have any back EMF either.
