Last year I used all NODMCU with WLED and just had the E1.31 in use. These worked very well on Halloween and all through Christmas. I want a Falcon but the cost £198 for the Falcon F16v3 plus all the extras it will be a pricy upgrade. At the moment I'm just starting out myself so I'm building up my props for this year and maybe next year I'll treat myself to a Falcon.
I use the Falcon Player to run my show. All my props all over the house are controlled by WLED and NODMCU. My mega tree is running on a ESP32 and that is fine too.
I know that the WiFi does get a hammering this is why I put it on a VLAN. All my NODMCU's are on Solderless Breadboards too. The one thing I would say is make sure the NODMCU's are in a water proof box or kept inside somewhere.
