Used to have an ECG-P2 on my desk for testing strings with, but it took a while to boot and seemed like overkill so I build a pixel tester using the pixel testers that ray sells:

Now I can turn on/off the circuits rapidly for testing. It has 3 pigtails because I have 5v, 5v reverse polarity
(aargh) and 12v strings. I also included a pixel or 3 on board for each voltage to make sure I knew when it was turned on so I wouldn't accidentally plug things in live.

Next version I'll use a buck converter to power the 5v side.

You could just use a stepdown reg to power the 5V pixels from the 12V supply. If you really wanted to do it cheaply ($3 is sooooo expensive to some people) then you could probably get away with splitting the data signal to both the 12V and 5V pixels. The data for both types is a 5V signal so all you need to do is power the 12V and 5V outputs separately.
